The first of three major cases of the hepatitis C virus has been cleared to the FDA in the wake of the anti-retroviral drug sildenafil, the US Food and Drug Administration said on Wednesday.
The drug, which is used to treat, has been in shortage and is under review by the FDA.
The FDA said in a statement the drug was still being tested in the US and that it “should remain under FDA review pending further information.”
In November, it was reported that the drug had been detected in several US pharmacies and some from Thailand.
“While the agency has not received any confirmation, these are the first confirmed cases of a new drug being sold in the US,” it said.
The FDA said that it was “reviewing the status of the drug for its potential impact on the public health, safety and quality of the drug.”
